Trekking Details

The Biafo & Hispar trek, renowned as the world’s most extended non-polar glacier trek, spans an impressive 122 kilometers. This route follows the Braldu River, originating from the confluence of the Biafor and Biaho Rivers, fed by the Biafo, Panmah, and Baltaro glaciers. The trek features the Biafo Glacier, beginning at Lupe Lawo and famously dubbed Snow Lake by Sir Martin Conway in 1891. This trek navigates between the towering granite peaks of Biantha Brak, standing at 7,285 meters.
Above Snow Lake lies the Hispar La at 5,151 meters, bridging the Biafo and Hispar Glaciers. This pass forms a stunning high-altitude corridor known for its panoramic views and its pristine wilderness. The legendary English explorer H.W. Tilman once suggested he discovered Yeti footprints here in 1937, adding a layer of mystique to the already captivating landscape.
Glaciologists have marveled at Snow Lake’s depth, finding it extends nearly a mile beneath the surface. The area is also a wildlife sanctuary, hosting rare species such as snow leopards, Himalayan bears, ibex, and markhor.
The journey across Hispar Pass is not just a trek; it’s an expedition across one of Pakistan’s most extended glacier systems. With Snow Lake’s vast 77 square kilometer snow basin encircled by unspoiled peaks and cliffs, adventurers are treated to the raw beauty of nature’s grandeur, epitomizing the spirit of true wilderness exploration.

Welcome to Islamabad! Upon arrival at Islamabad International Airport, a representative from Star Expeditions will greet you. You’ll be transferred to your hotel, where you can settle in. In the evening, join us for dinner, during which we’ll outline the details of your upcoming trek.
Islamabad, nestled at the foothills of the western Himalayas, was deliberately established as Pakistan’s new capital in 1960. Enjoy the serene environment and prepare for the adventure ahead.

Day 2Spectacular Flight to Skardu (45 minutes, 2,230m/7,316ft)

After a restful night in Islamabad, take a breathtaking flight to Skardu, where you’ll catch your first glimpse of the majestic K2, Gondogoro La pass, and Nanga Parbat, among other renowned Karakoram peaks. Upon arrival, transfer to your hotel and meet the porters and trekking crew who will accompany you.

Skardu, the administrative center of the Baltistan region, was historically one of the largest Himalayan kingdoms. The Balti people, descendants of Tibetans and Mongolians, speak Balti, a language akin to Tibetan, and the area’s culture and architecture are heavily influenced by Tibetan traditions.

Note: The Islamabad to Skardu flight depends on clear weather. In case of cancellation, we will drive to Naran on the Karakoram Highway, spend the night there, and continue to Skardu the next day.

Day 3Sightseeing & Preparation Day in Skardu

Take advantage of a free day to explore Skardu, the gateway to towering peaks like K2 and the expansive Baltoro Glacier. Visit the historic Kharpocho Fort for breathtaking views of the town and the Indus River, perfect for sunrise or sunset photography. Explore a local organic village and the clear waters of Satpara and Kachura Lakes, or wander through the bustling local bazaar.

Day 4Skardu to Johla via Askole (131 km, 3,000m/9,842ft, 8 hours drive)

Travel along the mighty Indus and through the Shigar Valley before following the Braldu River to Askole, the last settlement before the wilderness.
